'97 Jeep Grand Cherokee CV replacement turns into broken Drive Line
Hello,
I recently bought a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2L V8 and had it in for an inspection, I had a the most detrimental parts replaced then. I then drove it 13 hrs across 2 states and it started to vibrate at high speeds. I brought it into another mechanic who told me I needed to replace my left cv joint. I set the appointment, they had it done fairly quick, but when I went to pick it up, it was violently shaking and it felt like something had popped loose.
I immediately took it back only to have them tell me it's now the Drive Line. It fell out of the cv joint and broke due to the smallest bumb in the road. I was told it had a "made in china" sticker and that it was too short for the vehicle.
They have had it for about 2 weeks now woth no update other than "I'm not sure of they're making one" or "it might take a while but if we can't find one we'll have someone weld a piece on to make it longer."
Now, I'm not overly familiar with parts of a vehicle, but a drive line doesn't just fall out, and there's no way to put one on that's too short. Even if they did, it wouldn't survive a 13 hr drive at 60-70mph.
My question is, am I being scammed? Or can something like this actually happen?

Welcome to the forum.
This listing shows parts similar to those I used on my '94 ZJ.
When I did mine I swapped both CV half shafts and both front wheel bearings.
Uncertain about a "drive line" and I personally rebuilt everything on my ZJ.
An examination of the linked image shows one short and one long half shaft. The length is different by a lot. I don't think even an idiot could confuse those two parts.
The disassembly / replacement / reassembly results in a rugged construction, suitable for a Jeep.
No idea why the repair failed. The ZJ is a PERFECT vehicle for those who like to turn their own wrenches.
Sorry about your problems.
