98 grand transfer case swap
I was wanting to swap out my 249 for a 242 or 231 and was wondering if the transfer case from a Durango would match up or what it would take to do this swap. Thanks

AFAIK, the 242 wasn't used in a Dodge truck. Also, if you want a 242, make sure it isn't a 242J from a 99+ WJ. There isn't a speed sensor in them, it's inside the transmission.
The 231 is an exceptionally strong unit and will pull weights far in excess of it's rating. IDK about the 242.

Yeah, it's inside the overdrive housing and counts the notches in the parking pawl. There's also one inside the front on the input shaft, they tell me. The older ones just used the CkPS signal for input speed.

See now your doing me a confuse. I don’t want to put words into your Mouth or anything, but the way it sounds is that I have to take the transmission apart to replace the sensor. Is it not just screwed into the case of the overdrive section on the drivers side facing at a low angle? The other thing from what I understand is the 42Re only has an output speed sensor. Is that not the case?

Well, not having had a problem with my speed sensors, all I have to go on is what I've read in the FSM. The input speed is from the crank sensor and the output sensor is in the O/D unit. It has a 2 wire plug, but no pictures of the sensor. There is no TCU and everything is controlled by the PCM. It would make sense if the sensor was a screw in deal, but I've never looked for it. I HAVE changed the NSS which is a screw in type.
Okay, I went to Rockauto and found it. It is a plastic screw in sensor. Cool. NTK is about $15.
