Well I used 2 bottles of Lucas at $9 a piece (Meijer or Walmart is cheaper than autozone etc) And I ended up buying/using 9 quarts of ATF+4 tranny fluid at about $5 a quart. Additionally, I had to get a gasket/filter kit from autozone for $6.75. A little hint, make sure you get the old gasket off completely! Dont leave any behind or it will leak (I learned the hard way). So all in you are looking at right around $70. Of course, you may not have to do it twice like I did, obviously lowering your cost of materials. If your ZJ tranny is anything like my WJ, then prepare to get ATF absolutely everywhere. I tried as best I could to make it a neat clean project, but there really is no glamorous way to drop the pan without ATF spilling everywhere. Also, dont over tighten the bolts when reassembling, only about ~8lbs I think. Another tip, the Lucas is very very thick, making it difficult to pour down the fill tube. To combat this I poured in about half a bottle of regular ATF, then poured the Lucas into the ATF bottle and mixed it. It flows in much easier this way. Let me know if I can be of any other help! Good luck!

I usually drop the pan and change the fluid after about 30000 miles, also adjust the bands (Haynes manual, easy). After I drive around for a few days I pump whatever I can out through the dipstick and replace the fluids, then run another few days. I repeat the dipstick pumping and replacing the fluids again . It costs a few more dollars in fluids that way but you really don't have to pay a lot more having someone flush the transmission. By the way I also own a 99' WJ.

I've got the 98 ZJ and my haynes is on order as no one in the UK stocked or could be bothered to get me a GC manual in - Haynes would not supply me direct - so mine is coming from over there with you guys. As I'm doing mine this weekend how do I adjust the bands? Or is that WJ only?
