Default AWD Transmission Shift Woes

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland AWD transmission / transfer case.
The transmission was rebuilt a couple of years ago and has been working fine. I have even towed with no problems.
Until -
My son was driving the car and said it was not going all the way into gear.
Then it would not go into Park.
I said, bring it home, don't drive it. Of course, he doesn't' listen. It's over at his dad's house.
Now it won't go into P,D, or R almost like the linkage is no longer working.
I am going over to see check the linkage.
Thoughts?
~P.

That transmission shifts by cable, not linkage. The cable may have come loose on the quadrant inside the tranny or at the shifter. (best case scenario)
