breaking the bead????
How can I get a stubborn tire off a rim WITHOUT taking it somewhere to get done? I've tried driving my Grand Cherokee tire up on it right along the rim edge and it still didn't break the bead. Please help!

Years ago I used to swap my own tires, too much physical effort for me now. Easier to have a machine do it. jmho. The hi-lift jack is a sweet idea!!

Hi-lift method works pretty good, sometimes using a small piece of 2x4 placed under the foot and by the bead can help too. I have also used a truck and start to drive up on the side of the tire, you kind of have to position the wheel/tire as if you are going to be driving over the tire but not the rim.
This is hard work to do and usually something I only want to consider when only doing one tire or stuck on a trail or something. Without having at least the proper hand type tire tools the work to do it manually sucks. Double bead lock or 2 piece wheels make it easier for this kind of work.

If you going to scrap the tire you can always cut it off using a hack saw and a cut off wheel being very carefull when you get close to the rim with either of those tools. I have done this with motorcycle and tractor tires when it just wasnt convenient to get to a tire shop.

make a bead breaker. all you need is a 2x4 (10ft) and some angle iron and 2 bolts park a car on the flatboard in front of the angle iron to anchor it, then it's just placing the tire so the angle cut pivot board meet the bead, and use the long board as a lever. here's a diagram.
2x4's in red
angle iron in blue
bolts in black
it works like a charm and most of us already have enough stuff laying around to make it.
