Peter, in my opinion, I would never use silicone gasket material on a trans pan for fear of getting loose chunks into the valve body. I know there's a filter there, but I've had an experience with someone who used it on a carbeurator to stop a fuel leak and it found it's way into the idle jets. It was a PITA to get out and a long time to find the problem. It's just one of my quirks. I prefer to use Permatex Spray-a-Gasket. I hang the gasket up and spray both sides, then stick it to the pan.

The reusable gasket is rigid and made of steel sandwiched between rubber. Works awesome and worth every penny.

What a beach! Why didn't I think of that See that's why I hang in the TechForum I learn something new all the time from you guys.

Thanks for sharing Dave. Although all the Trans places I know of use it. I'll never use sealer again!

Dang! Now I'm going to loose sleep thinking about it

Next time, its the definitely the re usable one. Where do you buy that? Online? Thank you.

Good morning-

Hey guys as you may have read in my previous posts that I purchased this 02 Overlander WJ 47 105k from a shyster used car salesman mechanic that buys them and flips them. He claimed it had a tow package on it?? I don't believe him as he BSd me on several other matters...

The vehicle did have an after market hitch on it with no wiring? Not sure if the previous owners used it as a bike rack, game carry rack etc. ?? I will be using this vehicle as a DD and to tow a 5000LB fishing boat.

Question;

1.) How can I determine if it has a tow package on it or not?

2.) How to determine what Trans and or Gears I have on this vehicle? With the VIN?

3.) I will be installing this aftermarket Trans oil cooler is there anything else I should look at adding to avoid additional stress damage on my vehicle ??

Here are some photos of that ordeal in matching the same trans filter to the correct one.

If you read above the auto parts store in my area all sell the 2WD filter Vs the correct one for 4wd WJs.

Note: The longer neck on the correct filter. Also note specifically the hump on the left side filter on the right side of the neck?

If you get this filter in error once installed the pan won't fit correctly.

I also went ahead and replaced the transfer case fluid as suggested by you savvy Tech Guys guys ..

All that's really left to do (Unless I'm missing something) is my differential fluids. Then I'll know as a fact that all major fluids were done at approx 100K that should hold me over for a 6-12 months depending on my ongoing mileage. Thanks for all your help guys.

*Special gasket for the differential Dave or is it OK to use the silicone like everyone else does??

Enjoy your Monday guys.

PeterB.

I went to my dealer for a gasket for my D35 and they told me the only way to get one was to buy a cover. They said to use blue RTV. There is nothing inside the diff that RTV will damage unless you're got a selective locker.

I read about some guys that had to open up a diff on the trail. After inspecting it and fixing the problem, they poured the lube into zip-lock sandwich bags, stuffed them in, and reinstalled the cover. When they got home, the plastic bags were just about atomized and mixed with the lube, but didn't cause any problems. I don't think a little RTV will either.

What did you put in the T/C? I thought is was supposed to be ATF+4.

If you're going to tow that boat, I'd use 75W140 Synthetic gear oil in the rear diff. That's what I'm running because I put about 600 to 800 lbs of newspaper in there 3 times a week.

Sorry Peter, but your pic of the t-case looked like you were putting gear lube in it.

I used Valvoline Synthetic gear lube and it cost me $17 a bottle.

You're right Dave. According to page 267 of my owners manual (a great resource) if that's a SelecTrac, it should be ATF 4. If it's a QuadraTrac, it should be Mopar transfer case fluid which I think might be 80W90. This was introduced in 1999 due to some issues with the NV247 transfer case. TSB 210999

I ended up doing some looking around and talking with several Transmission places about where to install a Trans cooler in my car. Couple places I went to in particular a CoolHeat who specialize in this kinda thing said no problem $160 including the filter, another place wanted a hondo.

Naturally I had the tech at CoolHeat come outside and show my exactly where and how the installation would be done. The main thing was you should use a high performance smaller unit to 5K capacity. This one happens to be 7.5" X 15.5" which according to CoolHeet it should fit perfectly in front of the AC condenser... Wish me luck I'm going to try put it in tomorrow.

Holy crap big Pete, when I saw the pic of that babe on the first page, I didn't know if I should be changing my transmission fluid or masturbating.
I knew you were a man after my own heart.
