Check engine light, stuck in first gear (solved)
Posting this to hopefully help someone in the future. Funny side story, it sucks when the bottom of the Jeep is covered in mud and you can't get to the spray wash.Yesterday my 1993 ZJ's check engine light came on and it wouldn't go over 25mph. Was stuck in first gear. Everything I looked up said it was the vehicle speed sensor (my Jeep is pre-OBD so I can't pull codes). So I swapped it out. Same issues. So I changed the pigtail going to the sensor. Still doing it. Did a bunch of reading and checked a bunch of stuff, still thinking it was either trans or electrical. Then I stumbled upon an article that said the throttle position sensor can show similar symptoms. Changed that out and problem solved! The old TPS literally broke in two when I removed it. I didn't know this before but these Jeeps go into a limp mode when the check engine light comes on. Glad it ended up being a simple fix.
