Clicking in 4WD
Well after replacing BOTH CV axle shafts. and trouble shooting i cant seem to find out whats clicking with my 4X4! i am driving a 1994 jeep zj and my 4wd works (to an extent it seems to to slowly dying) but my issue is when it gets put into 4 wheel it clicks badly, it does not click when driving down the road unless i let off the gas and if im offroad and push the accelerator it clicks horribly, i was planning on going home and removing the front drive shaft, putting her in 4 and seeing seeing if the issue is something up front but before i do so do you think this could just be a transfer case bearing? any input appreciated thanks you very much. (expecting a response from you dave) haha

Jeez Ryan, it's one thing after another with you, isn't it? If the clicking is not rhythmic and is coming from the t/case, I suspect a worn chain skipping over drive teeth. There are several good YouTube videos on changing it. You can do it without pulling the case out.

Okay Noah! My bad. rockauto.com has them for about $100. The only REAL way to tell if it's bad is to pull the rear case half and see. If caught soon enough, the drive sprockets should be fine. The only hard part about the repair is a couple of PITA snap rings and getting it sealed up again.

You WERE waiting for my response, weren't you? I spent about an hour looking at those videos because I was curious myself. My WJ has about 187K on it, mostly road miles, and I was curious if mine was worn, but I'm not showing any problems, YET! I'm conscience of this problem because my brother broke a chain in his Blazer and it destroyed the case! (NP208)

Wait!....I'm confused. What vehicle are we talking about? I thought it was only clicking in 4wd. You have a 242 t/case, right?
Okay, rereading the original post shows a 94 ZJ. It MAY be front axle u-joints. Going straight they won't make noise, but in a turn, especially under power, they can click, squeak, or cause wheel hopping and binding. The u-joints are only about $10 each and are easy to replace. They are not greaseable in assembly, so make sure they are full when you put them in. DON'T rely on the packing grease only.
I sometimes get confused talking to so many guys. I got you confused with Clayto and his WJ engine problems. I'll try not to jump in until my brain is engaged. LOL!

Yes only in 4wd does it bind/click, although! it will "pop" if i go around a corner with a steep drop or incline like exiting a gas station or entering a out of level driveway.

Okay, forget what I said about the u-joints if you've got CVs. It still sounds like the t/case to me. The chain came to mind because of it's age.
BRAIN FART!!! How about the front driveshaft splines? My Chevy truck's front shaft splines were worn out causing vibration and popping when in 4wd. Just an idea.

CV joints will click when turning, sometimes only in reverse or only forward, generally heard when slow and power applied. It's quite common on fwd cars to hear snd diagnose, I'd guess it would react the same while in 4wd. Either way will be looking to see what you find.
