Default code p1762

My 2004 2wd 6cyl. jeep cherokee just started having trouble shifting from first into second. If you let off the gas, it will shift. It gives a P1762 code, which is the governor pressure sensor. The jeep has 200,000 miles on it. I know I have changed the trans. fluid and filter before, but don't know how long it has been.
1) can I safely change the transmission fluid and filter. There seems to be some controversy about this.
20 do I need to purchase a new governor pressure sensor (solenoid)

Thanks for any help!!

Welcome to CF. With that many miles on it I wouldn't flush it, only change the fluid and filter. But that being said, you might still need to change the solenoid.

I actually just changed my fluid and filter over the weekend on my 04 and it was a piece of cake. You will have to take off the exhaust hanger to get to one of the bolts on the transmission. It's a tight space to get it off but I did it with a small cresant wrench along with a socket wrench. Oh, and have a bunch of towels handy because it's a rather messy process.

I have a large plastic dishpan that I use to ketch the fluid. If you loosen it carefully, you can get it to drain from a corner and minimize spillage.
