Cold Air intake Debate
#16
Made a difference on my 4.0L, same on my son's.
Dunno what to say other than some folks expect off the chart Butt-Dyno results, and that simply doesn't happen.
Keep in mind that any Dyno result needs to be weighted against altitude, ambient temperatures, humidity, air density, etc, etc,. A 25HP increase is impressive, but those results are usually in 3rd gear on an auto (or 4th on a standard) with a direct 1:1 final drive ratio.
25 extra HP doesn't mean a tremendous amount when your crawling along in low-range at 1800 rpm, but it might give you the extra boost you need when you have to give your rig a little "Moab Bump" to mount or clear an obstacle.
Increased performance? Yes because your jeep will breath easier.
Increased fuel economy? Yes, see above and keep your foot out of it.
Heat soak in the tube? No, the air in the tube is moving and therefore isn't in the tube long enough to suck up a bunch of heat.
Later model heeps don't have the hole behind the headlight so it might benefit those owners to add the hole and allow more (cooler) airflow to the filter.
Bottom line:
Think about your rig and the type of terrain you wheel on.
Think about your driving style.
Think about the return on investment.
If you're satisfied that the benefits are worth the cost, then buy one.
If you are happy with the Cool/Wow Factor, then buy one.
If you are unsure....keep your money in your pocket.
Disregard any blanket statements that say "No they don't Work" the same way you ignore embellished reports of rock crushing power gains.
Do your homework, keep an open mind, spend your money the way you see fit.

Well said Frank
I would add that the gains in horsepower are strictly at the top end. So if you are the type of person that uses the 4-6K range in your Jeep, then it will help. If not, you will not notice much.

Me personally o would want one for the wow factor and hoping a lil fuel economy. It sucks it $200+ and the k&n is notorious for letting in dirt and oil a filter is a pain. I would like to know how http://www.carid.com/2001-jeep-chero...ke-113643.html is. I like the direct bolt on onto the stock box

I agree with all of you syaing it's your money spend it as you see fit. I am willing to bet the claims are true of HP and MPG, but with a new motor and exhaust. My 97 has 16xxxx miles on it now and engine is worn out. Would I expect a 25 HP gain and make 10000 mpg? NO...However I would think that throwing a re-man, rebuilt, stroker, ETC motor in it, along with a (insert name brand here) AI, you should see some gains.

i did a cheap specter filter "upgrade" with some old sheet metal to act as a water/heat shield... the only real reason i changed filters was cause i was getting tired of that stupid paper filter soaking up so much damn water every time i got into water above my bumper. so i put a specter oiled filter on, and built a ugly "heat shield" around the filter to deflect water flying out of the radiator fan and stock hole behind the headlight...and the oiled filters resist water very well, and it sounds cool haha.

The middle ground i chose (and am very happy with) is a Spectre high performance filter that fits right in the stock air box. It's about $20 and allows far greater air flow than a paper filter, and claims added HP (although it seemed so- hard to say). Only downside is it needs oiled every so often.

save your money, just bore your throttle body!!! your seat-of-the pants meter will feel it and you won't have to oil the darn filter.
spend wisely...and learn from others that didn't

My wife got me a specter intake system that pulls air from the cowl so its a direct flow from outside. I just don't like the size of the filter another fact you have to drill a hole in the firewall. But i guess the
price was good. Ill let ya'll know how it goes. It looks a lot different than the others and dosent get the mud that splashes in the engine compartment. Its from quadratec.
