SOLVED - I haven't run into this before, but it turned out to be a bad crimp on the ends of the battery cable. Guess I was in a rush ... Works perfect now.

I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee. Best way to explain it is with videos:

. This same thing happens with the starter totally removed or with removing the starter relay.

. Once I connect the starter and the relay and go to start, it's as if the entire computer shuts down. I can't do anything at this point, and have to disconnect the battery for a while, then I can reconnect and everything comes back.

I bench tested the starter and it's fine, but have tried a new one for good measure. Same.

I have fuel pressure. I have cleaned all grounds. No blown fuses, and have a relay tester and all test good. Swapped with horn just to be safe, same issue. Also jumped the starter relay manually, same issue.

I have OBD2 access, and it reports nothing in regards to codes, though I would imagine with the battery disconnected for a prolong period of time that's not saying much.

I feel like it's a short somewhere, but I can't identify anything when it's just sitting there.

I know these are pretty common for electric issues, but I haven't really seen anyone report something exactly like this. It's normally nothing or crank but no start.

Figured I would share the videos in case someone has ever seen this before.

New battery, fully charged. Redid ends, and they're attached securely to battery. I charge the battery each time I have to disconnect while waiting for everything to "reset".
