Desperate help -backfiring 1996 jeep grand cherokee laredo
Help if you can... While driving, my sister's Jeep will backfire and the engine will shut off. Sometimes it's hard to start and she's recently had these things replaced/repaired.
spark plugs/wires
fuel pump
distributor cap/rotary button
O2 sensor
ANY IDEAS???? She has spent over $1,000 with no results.

Check the firing order, that would be the only cause of back firing through the throttle body, unless you have a burnt valve (not likely). How did it run before the plug wires were changed?

96 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 wont start and runs rough
I am having a similar issue with my jeep, so here is goes.
My jeep cut out one night when trying to merge into traffic. So I replace the ignition coil hoping for an easy fix. No such luck so I tested for power to the coil and had none so I replace the crank position sensor and that was fixed. So then it wouldn't start so I checked the fuel pressure and have about 50psi at the fuel rail. So I checked the timing and it appears good to me. I checked it by lining the notch on the crank pulley with the zero on the tab and checking that the number 1 piston was TDC and the rotor was on the number on spark plug. Then in desperation I changed the ECM, but still no go. I then checked the compression of the cylinders and they were all really low between 30 and 60 psi, so I suspected cylinder wash out and poured a little oil in the cylinders and pressure went right back up to normal. Then with enormous amounts of cranking it finally started. It was running rough and was backfiring threw the intake. It threw a code which I have not yet checked, but was told it could be caused because I haven't had the computer programed yet. I planned on limping it to the parts store to get it programed and codes check in the morning but now it wont start!!! I am getting fed up with this thing and need help ASAP!!!

Out of the blue
My 97 started surging (hunting for idle). Then it started throwing codes. Throttle position sensor, Faulty secondary ignition sense (on a new coil). Never the same code twice. It also would chatter (Kind of die but not really several times within a second ) at around 50mph so I'm thinking transmission issues. Because it was hard to tell if that was ignition or overdive chatter. So I started looking around and found that my C1 connector on the PCM was about to fall off, literally. The other two connectors had a lock of sorts on them, but C1 did not. A zip tie around the PCm and no more issues
