Thanks, Kymasabe. Your last post is helpful, and I'm grateful. I did search the forum myself, but didn't find the post you linked, because I was using the word "detent", and that doesn't appear anywhere in that post.

I copied that post to my Notes app, so I can consult it next time I'm in Lowe's. Hopefully I can find the time to make the repair before I lose track of the parts.

No, it's not like I'm sitting around waiting from someone else to do this. I went to the junkyard a couple of weeks ago for seatbelts and a power rearview mirror for this Jeep, but they didn't have any. No junkyard around me lets you wander the yards and take parts off yourself. I miss that a lot.

Today I had to pull the ignition switch out of my Crossfire because it locked up 20 miles from home. So I couldn't get to the screaming power steering pump on this Grand Cherokee. The power steering pump pulley shattered 35 miles away from home a year-and-a-half ago, so I replaced the whole pump then because it barfed little bits of metal into the system. I also installed new hoses, flushed the whole system, and installed a fluid filter. Guess something didn't work out right, because it's been slowly screaming louder and louder over the past few months.

When I bought my 2004 Dodge 1500 4WD, the rear differential blew up on the way home. That took several trips to various junkyards to find a suitable donor housing to rebuild, but I finally did. Love that truck.

I like driving Mopars, and I have a taste for older ones. But, unfortunately, I don't have the time or training to be a full-time mechanic. So I depend on bulletin boards like this one to fill in the many gaps in my knowledge so I can keep my cars on the road. I'm pretty sure that without these resources, my cars would hit the junkyard a whole lot faster. I'm pretty proud to say this 5.9 Limited just crossed 200k a couple of months ago, and it's still going strong, even if the driver's door won't stay open like it should.

I did take the Crossfire to the Dodge dealer a couple of weeks ago to find out what they could do with the ignition switch. They had no idea what might be wrong, or even whether they could get parts. So they took my number and said they'd call. Of course, they still haven't.

The Crossfire ignition switch has been intermittently glitchy for a couple of years now. But yesterday was the first time it locked up completely and just would not budge. The Crossfire forum had a great write-up complete with pics showing exactly what to take apart to get to the steering wheel lock mechanism to remove (or replace) the malfunctioning piece. The write-up was spot-on, and probably saved me a tow bill and hundreds of dollars in parts & labor.

What does a Crossfire forum have to do with this Grand Cherokee issue?

We car guys gotta stick together, or our cars will die.

Thanks even to those of you who posted about the wrong vehicle at first. Obviously I could've been clearer in the first post. But at least you guys offered a helping hand.

So, thanks again.

Thomas

My buddy had a Crossfire (which ever the hipo model was with the supercharger), that had the ignition switch go out on it like yours. Dealer wanted over 1000 dollars to do the job because of it's location. He had an aftermarket warranty that took care of it lucky for him.
