I bought a 94 ZJ AWD with the front driveshaft out. IT DOES/WILL ruin your VC. I know it's already been said but I just wanted you to know for sure that it really does happen. I drove on it less than 1k miles and it was starting to go. I think the owner had it off 1 week prior to me purchasing the ZJ. And one more thing to add; with the front driveshaft out - you will not notice or feel the VC or transfer case going out. Once you get the driveshaft back on you will notice if the VC is starting to go. When you get the front shaft back in, go out and drive in figure 8's with the wheels turned as far as they go. You might feel the wheels tugging, screening, bouncing etc... this will indicate a bad VC. Good luck. Oh and I went to 3 mechanics and the dealership... but it was this forum who helped me find and resolve the issue. In fact, tomorrow morning I'm picking up a 231 from a 94 ZJ. I'm hoping its a straight swap for my 94. Good luck with yours man!!

Your front DS is probably out because the VC is bad already.

I took mine up to 55mph with front DS installed 2 days ago and it was vibrating/shaking some....it definitely wasn't right, but it seems fine with front DS out.

Hopefully it will not become a larger problem while I drive it until I can get another T-case.

Syracuse here. You'd be better off with the 242. I know. I've been there.
