haha it doesnt need to be crazy long. Harbor freight also sells a mechanic stethoscope that works exactly for that purpose. I used a screwdriver for years then bought the stethoscope for dirt cheap at HF one day looking to waste money.

Heapy i did not mean to be rude i was just saying i would need a very long one because i am older and not a nubile as i once was and i am not a beendy as i once was so i would need a 2 foot one to reach to the back ,although i believe it is in the front and top of the motor.Thank you and all the guys that have replied i just do not know what to do ,because i will have to do all the work myself and i really do not know how to rebuild a motor I get 450 dollars a month for my disability and that's it pure and simple so tring to do cheap things in hopes of being able to drive this jeep for a while longer makes all the differences to me as i am not long for this earth, So again guys Thank you.

The 4.0 originally speced as high as 20w50 oil you are not going to hurt anything running a 40 weight oil, I run 15w40 in mine all year around it gives me better oil pressure and seem to quiet down the lifter tick. All 4.0s get lifter tick eventually it's not anything to worry about. If it is rattling loudly it could be anything from a bad pulley, loose torque converter bolts or a worn out timing chain, exhaust manifold leaks can also sound like a knock sometimes.

Actually a piece of hose works pretty well as a stethoscope. To see if it's valve rocker noise, stick the hose into the oil filler cap. I can't tell the volume, but that noise doesn't seem like something critical. It does seem about the right timing for a rocker.

I have used every device trying to narrow my ticking down. All I can say is, good luck with that.
In order of appearance we have guest knock stars for the Jeep:
lifters
valve train components
worn valve guides
rod knock
piston slap
cam walk from missing thrust spring/ferrule
flexplate bolts loose
flexplate cracked
exhaust leaks
exhaust manifold cracks/loose

Did I miss any?

im sorry to say it ricky but it definitely sounds like something wrong but cant help you any more through this venue without being there in person. let us know if there are any other developments in the issue. I am curious to see what it is in the end.

Yeah that's a good youtube. Well no stethoscope needed there! That;s a big old knock. Exhaust? Almost certainly can hear some metal on metal there. Pull the valve cover and check for loose then start it and try to see if you have something not moving or loose in the valve train. However my bet is more on a rod knock. Does it stay constant even when warmed up?

Yes even when it is warm it stays the same ,so what is it that i need to do replace the rods and how do i do this.

Okay guys i have found out what was wrong ,a blown piston i guess it is what you call a skirt ,anyway i know need the engine torque specifications for a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo every thing as i torn it all the way down .Thank you guys for every thing.

Wow, yeah I just watched that video again. Sure sounds like lower end, broke skirt would explain that. You pulled the pan and found the chunks and/or could see the skirt..
