Default Good All-Terrain tire?

Hey, everyone! So I'm looking for new wheels and tires. I already have the wheels picked out (some cheap $40 steel wheels that'll do the trick), but now I'm on to tires. Does anyone know about some good AT tires that are also good in some light-moderate mud? I've seen so many great looking tires, but I'm not so sure which ones are the real deal. BTW, the tires I'm looking for are 31x10.5R15's so that's around the size I would like, I'm open to any and all brands. Anyone have any helpful advice for me?

To me the best bare basic at tire is a bf goodrich at ko2,Now a small step up is the bf goodrich at km2 which are right in the middle of a at and a mud tire with out being a nightmare on road.

Get ready for 20 opinions on different tires. Lol. I like my grabber red labels. Great in every condition I've thrown at it

Yup! Choosing a tire is an expensive decision you want to get right the first time, but it's like asking what's the best beer! Everybody has an opinion.

I'm running Cooper Discoverer AT3s on my WJ and they are perfect in snow, rain, grass, and dirt, but I haven't tried them in mud. IDK think the tread is open enough to clean itself out very well in mud, but I haven't tried them yet. They were recommended by the guys on this forum and so far, they work for my needs, which is deep snow. They are really good for wet traction except over those wide painted stoplines and are quiet at highway speeds.

I am a big fan of General Grabber AT2's. The wear very well on the street but also have not been in the mud with them.

I can tell you the General Grabber AT2s bite like cat's claws in snow, but because I run them all year long, they wear more than the Coopers. The open block pattern on the Grabbers might be real good in mud. For serious mud, you'll need a tire you won't like on the road.

I must tell you because of the way I use them, delivering newspapers with lots of U-turns, K-turns, and low speed maneuvering, I only get about 30K to 40K miles out of a set of tires.

Check out YouTube "Bleepin' Jeep", Wheeling in the Rain- Trailfest 2017 and check out some of their tires.

from all the rave around here, seems like duratrac seems to be the best all around tire.
but it all depends on what you have to wheel on. we have lots of rock, (canadian shield), roots and mud.

trail diggers are at times a close second, if not also a first choice.

I can second the BFGs for a good all-around tire. The old original A/Ts were crap, but the KOs are great. Great wear, low road noise, good handling. And unlike the old A/Ts, the KOs actually perform well off-road.

I daily drive my XJ, and wheel her hard on the weekends. They handle mild mud just fine, as good as any street-friendly tire is going to. Get into deep slop and you're gonna need dedicated mud tires.

and the BFGs are the lightest off road tire... if that makes a difference to you.

Yup! I ripped out a sidewall on a BFG A/T with a stick! I sideswiped a rock with my Coopers and it bent a steering rod, but the tire is fine!

How many miles are you getting from the coopers? I have a set of AT2's on a stock XJ with 53k miles on them with a good amount of meat left.

I have the BFG KO2's on mine, it's a daily driver and occasional off roader. Haven't had them in deep mud yet. But they work great in snow. Having said that I haven't been in the deep stuff like Dave talked about, only about 6 inches. As for mud, I would agree that they perform well in light mud and are reasonably quiet on the freeway. I air them down for sand and rocks and they are great. I live in Vegas so that's mostly what I encounter.

As far as wear is concerned, you shouldn't use my experience as a gauge because I do a lot of tight U-turns and driveway turnarounds that scrub off rubber quickly, but I'm getting more mileage out of the Coopers than any other tire I've tried so far. I've had Firestone Winterforce, BFG Rugged Terrain A/Ts, General Grabber AT2s, and whatever Goodyears it had on it when I bought it. I've discovered that once the tread depth gets down to around 1/4" or 3/16", I lose snow traction. I'm usually out delivering before the plows come out to play and I push snow deep enough that it's hard to open my door if I stop. Where most of the wear happens is on dry pavement. Long story, I got about 30K on my last set of Coopers.

The Firestones were my first radial snow tire and were on my ZJ. They were great in snow, but wore out over the summer very quickly.

The BFG KO2s are fairly new on the market so I might try them next. I'll say the Coopers are cheaper than the BFGs in 16".
