what you describe is very similar to my problems solved after rebuilding rear diff. but for front diff ofcourse.

when there is load and speed less noise and rumble, when stopping and no load there are lots of grinding and roaring.

Even the wear pattern looks good. Now you know what it's NOT without spending any money!

AS you know I was having the same problem as you.finally had a chance to get back to it today and solved the problem. When i originally changed to front diff,(which was the first thing i did) I made sure i got the same gear ratio as the one i was taking out. Well evidently this wasnt the first time it had been changed, tore into the rear diff this morning and learned that the rear was a 373,which explains all of my trouble and why it was only in 4x4

Hey guys been reading this and I have a question. I have a 88 xj. I had a noise in my four wheel drive so I went to the kick yard and got a front end out of a grand Cherokee. Two wheel drive is doing fine but when I put it in four high and let off the brake and start to move my front passenger tire area is making a new noise. So we changed the universal axle joint. Tighten the back lash up and put new oil in. Old oil was black and think like regular burnt motor oil. Went to try it out still have the noise. Can anyone help me out

Default Clicking noise

[QUOTE=XJLuke;855252]I don't think the universal would do it, usually you get a vibration or thump with a universal, it could be the front gears or the transfer. Does the noise increase with speed or when you're wheel is cut all the way left or right? of me how to Post my own topic?

My very loud clicking noise subsides when I push my quadratrac up toward 4hi. Praying it's just that the linkage slipped.
