Head Unit Wiring Help
Hi I was wondering if someone could help me out with a wiring issue I have. I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the Infinity sound system. I have a new head unit and I want to hook it up soon, but I don't know which wires are which. Someone attempted to wire it before I had the Jeep but I cannot tell what they did. He didn't mess with the harness but he did with the adapter and I do not have a clue if any of it is right. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Head Unit Wiring Help
You need to purchase a radio wiring kit (WITH Infinity Sound System ) for your GC. There will be two adapter plugs. One is Black the other is Gray. The OEM radio connectors will plug into these adapters. The aftermarket radio will have a plug with the following wire colors.(See below). Match them up with the adapter connectors.
With the Infinity Sound System you will need to connect the Blue/White wire on the aftermarket plug to the Blue wire on the adapter. This will provide power to the Infinity Amp. Also you MUST connect the braided ground lead from the OEM cable to the Black lead of the adapter plug.
You will also have an Orange and an Orange/White wire on the aftermarket radio plug. DO NOT connect these wires as they are for the dash illumination circuit and may cause you problems down the road. Tape off any unused wires.
The wires you will connect are:
Black Ground
Red +12V Switched
Yellow + 12V Constant
White + Left Front Speaker
White/Black - Left Front Speaker
Gray + Right Front Speaker
Gray/Black - Right Front Speaker
Green + Left Rear Speaker
Green/Black - Left Rear Speaker
Violet + Right Rear Speaker
Violet/Black - Right Rear Speaker
Blue/White + Infinity Amp Power
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you Bug why cant I connect the illumination wires? Also I have gotten new speakers and ran new wire and no longer require the amp. As I was messing with the head unit I noticed 2 speakers were blown and just redid it all. Where is the ground wire on the oem harness?

The ground wire is a Black or Green wire with a spade lug connector from the existing vehicle wiring. If it was removed by prev. owner, just put a circular lug on the Black wire from the radio harness wire and screw it to any metal part of the Jeep framework. Best to use star washers on each side of the screw to get a good ground. The illumination wiring can cause problems when you dim your dash lights. Some radios don't like to be dimmed ????

All they do is dim the head unit when the lights are turned on and allow you to change the head unit light output with the jeeps oem dimmer.

It took me forever to get this done, I'll take some photo's on mine this weekend if I get the chance. I only have the front speakers hooked up though, but it's friggin goofy as all heck the way they did it. I can explain it too, once I get the photos

They make a speaker mounting kit especially for the Jeep (Chrysler) sound systems. It takes minutes to speaker install with the kit.

If you Jeep is the 1998 GC you have the universal connector. You should have 2 connectors one is gray the other is black. If you have Infinity audio you must connect the blue to the blue/white lead.

Can you take a picture of the 3 connectors? Maybe we can come to a solution from there. Also add the aftermarket radio connector to the picture.
