Headlights stay on
Hi everyone. I haven't been here in a while and need your expertise.
My money pit A.K.A. 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9 has a prolem, well more than one. 1. The headlights: I cleaned the dash and flipped the headlight switch on and off several times very fast. The truck was running at the time. After I shut it off I saw the head lights on. The switch was in the off position. I turned them on an one light is dimmer than the other but not by much. Also the high beam indicator in on in the cluster it wont go away enen using the switch to go high to low. If I turn the switch on for the light all are on. When I turn it off the park lights go out but not the head lights. Luckily they do go out when I unplug them, with my luck I figured they would stay on then too. lolz
Any ideas before I spend $!00.00 on the switch and idk how much on relays.
Thanks guys you all are the best.

i had a similar issue on my cherokee. here's what I did, but I don't know if that's the same on your GC. My XJ, being from Canada, had the DRL module (daytime running lights) from factory which makes it so the lights are on at all times when driving.
one day in a parking lot I noticed my headlights stayed on and there was an odd smell. I discovered that the module was starting to fry and the only reason I knew where it was located was due to the smell and smoke coming from that area. I just unplugged the DRL module and ended up never replacing it.
A week or so later I replaced the headlight switch for peace of mind and noticed it had started melting. No clue if it was due to that, or if it was the cause of the issue, but after unplugging the DRL and replacing the headlight switch everything was back to normal. I only lost the daytime running lights but that's ok because I like it better that way.

Long shot, but I had a Chevy pickup years ago where three quick on/off cycles would override the auto lights. Check your manual - maybe the quick on/off cycles you did are some sort of "feature."

just throwing this out there, but did your headlights shut off after 15 seconds or so?
if you shut your jeep off, then turn off the headlights, there is a courtesy feature that leaves your lights on so you can see your way to your front door. they then shut off automatically.
just wondering if maybe you didn't know about this feature, and just stumbled upon it, unknowingly.

mine came from a different province and had to pass an inspection, but that was before the issue occured so i'll let it be unless I get a warning or something. if it were 10 or 20$ maybe i'd get it, but the cheapest I found is 60$ before shipping, no thanks!

Old fart with a wrench
Not just the lights! My dad was a pilot and I watched him shut down everything in the cockpit before the engine, so I do the same with my cars. Heater or A/C, radio, wipers, headlights, windows up, etc.
