Default Jeep 2001 grand Cherokee with 17,000 miles

Hi to everyone here, I'm new but this seems the place to be.

l have a 2001 grand Cherokee that the jeep mechanics here in the uk can't fix/ diagnose.
It makes a terrible juddering noise when turning at slow speeds, tight turns, also clicking and banging, people in the street stop and stare,

It is worse in reverse, and I have been told by people watching that the back wheels seem to sort of hop a bit.
I have just had all new fluids everywhere, transfer box, diff etc, the noise seemed to start just after this, but I can't be certain ,

Many thanks to everyone

I am new to this, But if you are certain this just started after the maintenance was done,is it possible the wrong fluids were used? I don't know which kind of 4 wheel drive system you have but this skipping during turns can be indicative of wrong transfer case fluid being installed.
Go here: http://wjjeeps.com/ Look up your year and which transfer-case you have in your WJ and see what the the fluid spec is and make sure your mechanic used the right stuff. Also. Make sure your not in 4 Low.

Does the rear differential call for a friction modifier? That can cause chatter and lock up while turning.

Welcome to CF!

We'd be happy to help, but we need to know a little more about your jeep. Underneath the jeep, on the side of the transfer case, there is a round, red tag with the model number on it. At least tell us what the shift pattern is.

I am sorry , it's a 4.7 v 8. I have asked the shop for the other details and am waiting, they have told me they are using the Lucas oil with the additive already in, not the molar whitch needs the additive, i can't see how there can be anything wrong with the transfer case or diff as the jeeps only done so few miles,,, thankyou for your help,

You probably have the NV247 constant 4wd transfer case. That only takes a special fluid made by Mopar and available only at a dealer. If you can find Mobiloil 424, it's a close substitute. Without this fluid, you'll get the juddering and jumping you are experiencing now. It costs about $13 USD per quart, but you only need 2 quarts.

ms-10216 is the part number for the factory fluid for the Transfercase with the AWD. Also if the rear differential required additive you must still add a bottle even though the oil says it already has it. All GL5 fluid has additive but it is not always enough which is why all manufacturers have additive (ford, GM, mopar, all have their own additive).

Thankyou all so very much, yes I do have the 247 transfer case as you say,,,,my problem seems to be that my mechanics feel that you don't need to add an anti slip additive to the Lucas oil they used as it says it has it in,, so they have put a transfer case from another 2001 grand Cherokee in to see if that is ok ,, if so then there must be something wrong with my transfer case,,,,,,, ?.i must say it is a great deal better than mine,,, still a little judder but not as bad,, but I can't believe there can possibly be anything wrong with my transfer case as it has only done 17,000 miles? I can't afford to pay for repairs that I may not need and don't want my mechanics to start on the do and other things, I do trust my mechanics and mean them no disrespect,,, but I still get a niggling feeling that there can't be anything wrong with my transfer box, thankyou to everyone, and I mean that ,,, john

The write-up I read about the 247 was when Chrysler first produced it, they put ATF+4 in it and discovered they had a problem. They then used Mobiloil 424 and that cured the juddering, so they formulated their own fluid based on this research. It has to do with the clutches they replaced the viscous clutch unit with. The old 249 t/case used a sealed viscous clutch with it's own fluid in it and now the 247 has a different type of clutch system.

I'm not saying Lucas is a bad product, but it's not what Chrysler recommends. I agree your t/case should not be bad at only 17,000 miles. It's possible it was assembled with ATF+4 in it. The ONLY recommended fluid is Mopar P/N 05016796AB

Go to wjjeeps.com and check it out.

Marvin. Dave speaks the truth and that is exactly what I told you in my post which was the first response to your question. Go to wjjeeps.com and read what the recommended fluid is for your TCase. I also told you that. It's going to be cheaper to try the Specd fluid than put in another TCase. Once you put the new fluid in, drive it for a few weeks. Your skipping might not change instantly.

Hello Marvin

I have a 04 WJ with the same TC in it and over 200,000 mi on it and all that has ever been in it was the Mopar fluid sold only only by Chy dealers. Insist your people install this fluid in it now like others have stated.

Have the mechanic inspect the upper a-arm bushings/balljoint in the rear.. known culprit and i'v had to replace. Unlikely with 17K but it does cause that symptom.

I did an entire rear suspension replacement (other than coils) at 180K miles bout a year ago.

It depends weither you have Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive. The QD system uses Vari-loc units in both axles and needs 4 oz of limited slip additive as well as whatever is in the fluid you use. For normal driving, use 80/90 gear oil. For hard usage, like towing, use 75W-140 synthetic gear oil.

With Quadra-Trac II, I don't think you have locking axles. A rear Vari-loc was optional on some Limited models.

Because I use my jeep in the snow in stop-and-go mode delivering newspapers, I use 75W-140 Synthetic in both axles. This fluid has LS additive in it, but not enough for Vari-Loc.

Hi, my mechanics put my transfer box in another v8 same year etc and that v8 started binding and jumping all over the place, he went in early to do this,,,, so it would seem that my t case is faulty, ,,,the plan is to send it way to see what's wrong with it, also they are going to check the pump in my diffs to see if they are ok,,,,, maybe it's because the car has only averaged a 1,000 miles a year for its lifetime,,,,,, thought it would be brilliant,, lol,,, it is really,,, it's a jeep thing ain't it,,,, I'm lucky to have all the help I'm getting, both from you guys and my mechanic. Any thoughts would be great,,, I will keep you posted, cheers .
