It just feels as if I downshifted when it starts. The RPMs get higher and then obviously the engine gets a little louder. No sounds besides that.

I was actually talking about the upshift from 3rd - 4th gear. It does shift into overdrive briefly correct? You should also check the transmission fluid and make sure it still looks like transmission fluid and not burnt. There are a several things here it could be. A few are somewhat easily repairable and another is not. Possibly 3-4 accumulator spring which is an easy fix and a known problem with these transmissions (not expensive), an electrical connector issue, this can be hard to find, Governor pressure solenoid, or solenoid pack under the valve body these are a little more difficult to fix. Or lastly it could be a pressure bleed off due to orifice filter missing on the overdrive section housing.

Okay so I'm gonna have to get inside the transmission pan to do this thing, huh? I watched a few videos on other transmissions and it seems like I would want to go in, change the part, change the filter and the seal, and change the fluid before I get out. Not something I wanna open twice?

And what should the fluid look like? Red? I doubt my girl ever changed it. Burnt would look dark? Wish they made those pans that you empty your fluid into in a clear plastic so you could more easily see the old fluid...

And honestly I never use overdrive. I'm not sure what it's supposed to feel like. Maybe I'll use it today before it starts acting up. But when it has these issues, going back to 4th feels fine. Just like shifting a manual when you were in a lower gear than you needed to be, into the correct gear.

Whoa, lets stop here because now I am confused. You never use overdrive? So, you are saying that you have the overdrive button pushed on the shifter **** to defeat overdrive? The shift pattern should be from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. Fourth gear is your overdrive. Forth gear or overdrive is your top gear. If it cycles out of overdrive the rpm jump on the engine should only be subtle. If you are not using overdrive and it's falling out of 3rd gear into 2nd gear, that would explain the high revs and also is likely a different problem.

In any event, pull the dipstick out the transmission and look at the fluid. It should be red, slight discolored is ok but the darker it is the worst state it's in. So, if it looks more like engine oil than trans fluid, it's likely burning up.

4th gear IS overdrive. It's called O/D because the output shaft turns faster then the engine, that's all. The lock-up converter eliminates the converter slip and adds about 10% more rpm to the transmission shaft, thus not producing torque converter heat. That you can barely feel, unless you're paying close attention.

So yes...I meant I never touch the button. I guess I always use it and so has she. I pushed the button once the issue started to happen and left it off for a bit before turning it back on...didn't change a thing.

Okay so what do you think the first thing I need to try is? The easiest/most likely/least expensive part...? Can't work on it until Wednesday...

Guys? Any idea where I should start? I did the more basic maintenance that I had to do on her car and now I need to start working on the O/D issue. I'd appreciate any ideas on what might be the more likely component to be bad. It would seem that you have experience on this type of thing.

Is it pulling any codes? Your P0783 code is for the 3-4 shift solenoid. You may have a loose connection at the solenoid inside the trans.
