Did you have to have that alarm for the remote start to work?

Not sure what alarm you are referring to. I bought a blank chip key from Amazon and programmed it with my two originals. A chip key needs to be installed in the vehicle in a box for the remote start to work. this key needs not to have the teeth cut in it, just needs to have chip programmed. I also bought a plain key at the hardware store to unlock the doors as a last resort (battery dead, keys locked inside). the blank key will start jeep but will only run for 5 seconds. if started with the remote blank key works as normal. I now have four fobs, two with remote start and two that came with jeep. Hope that helps.

For my son and being his first vehicle I'll let him decide what he wants as far as convenience. He has started his first job as well so all of those little things that he wants and not necessarily need, I'll let him get those. I'll be there to help him learn how to go about getting things/finding things at a better deal ect but will be a good learning experience and teaching/responsibility thing for him.

Okay, the security system is built into every jeep from the factory and is controlled by the key fob and the door key switches. According to my FSM, the alarm will set itself when all the doors are locked and the key is not in the ignition. So, you can lock all the doors with the lock button on the driver's door module, then get out and manually lock the driver's door, close it, and it will set itself. Just make sure you have the keys in your hand!
Any remote start system (as far as WJs are concerned) is an aftermarket add-on. I've heard too many rumors about problems involved with the interface of both systems that I took the batteries out off my remote start fobs and pulled the 2 fuses that power the system. I was going to remove the control box but it has about 30 wires that disappear into the different harnesses under the dash that I said "screw that" and left it alone. I bought the jeep with this system installed by the PO and it works. It was proved to me by the seller but that's the only time it was used since I got it. I would not have installed it myself because I don't trust it. But that's me.

Is that the only way to set the alarm? Does it not automatically arm with just locking the doors when get out via the fob with doors closed?
Or with locking the doors via the drivers side door panel before you shut the door and then with door closed it arms?

None of my vehicles have the remote starter and so if my son wants that then he'll have to get it lol.
Probably not a game changer for him to have it though.

No, it locks and the alarm sets normally with the fob. I'm just warning you that it may lock itself under certain conditions. It's never happened to me, but it has the option. I've also "pocket-dialed" the alarm set by something else in my pocket pushing the fob buttons!
It gets very frustrating when you run out in the pouring rain to quickly grab something you forgot in the jeep, only to find it's locked and your keys are in the house! D'oh!
