Loud knock coming from rear end
My 2004 Grand Cherokee (4.7 - Quadra Trac) has developed a loud knocking sound when the car starts moving fwd. It seems to increase in frequency / volume as you speed up, but diminishes as you apply the brakes. This leads me to suspect the rear brakes may be the culprit, but that is just a guess. It seems isolated to the left-rear side only. Any ideas what I may be faced with here? TIA Stew

There may be a problem with the pads coming loose (de-laminating) from the backing material. Applying the brakes/pressure makes them remain in contact and stops the noise. JMO
Could also be an issue with the wheel lugs. JMO

Thank you gentlemen. I will check the lugs first as I recently had new tires installed. I am thinking the rear brake pads are a strong possibility since they have around 60K on them and are about due for a change anyways. Can anyone recommend a great pad for me to use?

Just got the car back from my mechanic and ..... the rear handbrakes were falling off. New ones installed - got away for under $200.

The e-brakes inside the rotor? Wow, that 's weird. Well you said you hadn't done the rear brakes in a while, so did you do those too when you serviced the rear pads and rotors? I guess not.
