Default muffler help/advice

hello everyone

i have a 1996 grand cherokee limited 4.0l

I'm having an issue thats keeping me from driving my jeep at all.

the muffler keeps detaching from the cat converter and i've tighten down the ubolt clamp as much as it will and it still does it and we are not talking in days or weeks but in seconds to a minute, can't even move it around my yard from one spot to another without it coming off.

i've tried other clamps and they dont work either.

the muffler and exhaust looks to be in good condition, i think prior it was welded (but not very good) and over the years the weld has broken loose.

here's my problem: i don't have the tools or knowledge to weld so i am going to have to take it to get fixed somewhere else which in turn causes another problem.

how do i get the muffler off the vehicle to be able to drive it to the shop.

the muffler and exhaust is one long piece it comes that way and i just can't get the clearance to be able to remove the unit.

is there something i am missing?

my other thought is to reconnect the part that holds the rear on and put the muffler back on the cat convert and clamp it back down and then use a metal twine wire and use the frame with the wires wrapped around the muffler, wont look pretty and it will probably come loose but at least it won't fall face down and be pushed by the vehicle with would be dangerous. it only needs to last long enough to get to the repair shop so they can weld it on.

before it came loose like two months ago causing me to park the jeep, one mechanic though my shocks was bad on a test drive cause of noise but his son said the shocks was fine and the noise was something else. well i figured out what the noise was. the muffler underneath the gas tank was resting on some bar (which on videos on the muffler removal never seems to be there and the mufflers are always parted to gather and they cut them off). so when i'd drive and hit a bump the muffler exhaust pipe would lift up and clang back down on the bar, assuming that was my first indicator the muffler was breaking free.

any advice on what i should do would be appreciated. I do not have a tool to cut the muffler from the pipe plus then it would need to be fixed if i did.

here's what my muffler looks like (the whole piece), except its one piece i don't think its been welded but its def not using a u bolt on the back.

thanks

This is a simple problem that is bring way over complicated. Either yank the darn thing out if you can't have it welded while it's under the vehicle or for God sake if you don't have the money just run it with only a cat lol

Im not sure what kind of clamp you are using, but I have found it much easier to use the "band" style of muffler clamp:

This style is more expensive but you should be able to get them at the usual places. They seem to be much more forgiving than the U Bolt style and I think they hold better since there is much more surface area to clamp onto. You don't need adapters on pipes of the same size either so if you have to cut your exhaust out you can put it back together without welding. We used to used them to patch holes in pipes in the POS trucks I used to buy as a kid.

Not sure if that is the solution that will work for you, but maybe it will help.

that clamp does not work i bought one of those and due to the location of the o2 sensor it don't fit on

bought another one that was shorter but it don't clamp tight enough

i want to yank the muffler out but I can't. its all one long piece after the cat converter to the end of the tail pipe. there is no way to maneuver it up and over the bar or whatever that bar is in the back. perhaps if it was on a lift it could be done since there would be more clearance with the muffler hanging down but having the jeep just sitting there I can't get it off.

I need to do something so i can take it to the mechanic shop to get fixed but its not safe to drive as it is since the muffler drops face down and driving you'd be pushing it alone the road and if you hit a speed bump, pot hole, etc you'd be in for some serious trouble.

when i get a chance I am going to see if i can just hang it up with some metal wires to be able to limp it to the shop. i don't care about the louder noise it would make at least not for the short term.
