Default need opinion or advise on noise problem

Hello,

now that I've gotten my main vehicle back from the stealership and some health issues are clearing up after thanksgiving week I want to start working on issues with my jeep, its got a lot of little things nothing that keeps it from being driven and i'd feel just fine getting in it and driving cross country although my rear would hurt from the seat.

I have a whole list of things but I don't want to overload or anything so looking at doing one or two things at a time.

I have noises when I drive from the rear end and sometimes when I go over speed bumps it really sounds rough.

i've had two people tell me the shocks are bad (was replaced a few years ago) and others tell me they are fine.

it don't sound like its the rear door panel which is loose (working on that too) but sounds like its coming from the outside and sometimes when going over speed bumps sounds like the shock don't work.

whats the easiest way to check them? what else could it be?

I was thinking about getting under the vehicle and having someone push it up and down.

it drives just fine just makes noises so i don't think its the differential? my 98 jeep had one that was driven without fluid although it drove fine it also didn't make noises.

speaking of it how do you check the fluid level in it?

anyways I look forward to any help, suggestions, etc.

Differential fluid levels are super easy to check. On the diff housing (also known as 'the pumpkin') there is a filler hole. You use it to poor the diff fluid into it when refilling. A lot of these just have a plastic rubber-like cap that simply presses into it to seal up the filler hole. It prys right off easily with the aid of a flat head screwdriver. Some diffs utilize a bolt of sorts that screws into the diff housing filler hole in order to seal them too though.

Pop it off and stick your finger inside of the pumpkin. The diff fluid level should be right at the level of the filler hole. You should feel gear oil fluid with the tip of your finger right at the hole.

When filling a diff.. You simply keep filling it up at the filler hole until it begins to spill out. Then you pop the cap back on.
