Did you check your transmission fluid level is correct? Check tranny fluid after driving at full operating temperature for at least 30 minutes or so. Check on a level surface, idling, I believe in Neutral (but check your dipstick) it may say check in Park. You could get a flush 'n fill? Expensive at a shop, but probably worth it. Or, as a more inexpensive DIY alternative, replace tranny filter and get 'some' new fluid in there. Good luck

Thanx for the advice do u really think it could be that simple?? I've heard that its gonna probably need rebuilt but I can't imagine that all the gears work fine some of the time and don't engage sometimes like it was 7 degrees this morning and it never went into overdrive and on the way home when it was 27 degrees it went into overdrive

Trans mission can stick in one gear if the selenoid for that gear is going bad.. Had the same problem on other vehicle of mine.. Worldn't shift out of first until it warmed up a bit, mostly in the moring.. drove it that way for awhile but had it rebuilt a few months later.

How much do the solenoids cost and how involved is it to change them

no solenoids for that.
Try this. start the vehicle, and instead of warming up in park, put it in neutral and let it come up to temp, then put it in gear and drive and see if it does the same.

So there aren't any solenoids?? And how does warming it up in neutral help?

There are solenoids, but not for specific clutch application.
The biggest problem these transmissions have is drain back and dry starts.
The trans will not pump fluid in park. So all the fluid drains back to the pan from the trans, and converter, then you start it up, and put it in gear, with no fluid circulating.
So try it and see what happens.
