Oil and Filter Recommendations
I thought I'd ask this as I've seen several comments concerning Fram oil filters and I'm wondering what they know about them that I don't.
Ever since I purchased my Jeep (it had 45,000 miles), I've put only full synthetic 5W30 in it. Usually I'll put in Valvoline (been using it on other cars for years), but if that's unavailable at the time I've put in Mobil-1 or Castrol full synthetics. I've also exclusively been using the Fram extended-life filters since I generally only change my oil at 5,000 mile intervals. I put in a quart of Slick-50 when I first bought it, but haven't done so since (I've heard some disturbing things about it). I'm now at 107,000+ miles and still going strong.
So, someone edjumacate me:
What oil filters do you recommend and why?
Also, what oil do you recommend and why?

I use Castrol GTX high milage, I have 119k miles on mine, and for filter I use fram,, it has work good for me, I also put a speaker magnet on the oil pan (outside) for it to help with any lose metals in the oil, learned that from a friends granpa... kinda helps when I start to drain the oil it has like dust in the oil so I guess is working..
ON my cobalt on the other hand I use full synthetic Mobil1 only, its real good. I use original filter
PS: also on the jeep I use zMAX fuel and motor additives, since its an high milage car so it helps clean all that good stuff..

Filtration rate and quality control on Fram is very poor. They rate right along with filters from the dollar store in tests. The filter has a bypass valve built in and the Fram is set too low so basically the filter never gets any flow thus no filtration. This is what I have read on several different sites.
K&N, Purolater, Wix or Mobll 1 filters are top of the line. Agfter those you have many middle of the pack filters and the bottom teir has Fram and store brands.
Oil if you want to get into that there are reams of reports on that subject but the important thing is that it is evolving b/c oil companies are changing their formulas frequently to comply with polution standards. Many oils are no longer suitable for our flat tappet 4.0L without additives. I use Mobil 1 but have to add ZDDP to protect my engines camshaft. Gonna step down off my soapbox now!!!
