Default Oil Gauge

My oil gauge does not stay still very much. Its moves at random. From 40 to max. So the gauge shows. What could cause this? And the gauge varys no matter the condition outside. It kinda worries me seeing my gauge move like that.

I'm no GC expert but it sounds like a bad sender or loose wire to the sender. If it were a 4.0L I would be more confident in that diagnosis.

Pretty damned good. Be sure you have a good quality oil filter, clean/fresh oil, and change the sending unit, then recheck.

I just had the oil changed and everything. Where is my sending unit located? About how much would one of those cost?

With the V8 your sending unit is at the back of the engine, to the left of the distributor. You will need a special oil pressure sending unit socket, or a deep 1-1/8" standard socket to get it out. Just be sure not to overtighten it when putting it back in. Just snug it up and call it good.

The only way to know for sure is to put a manual oil pressure gauge in place of your sending unit, then drive your rig around and see if the pressure is stable or not. 9 times out of 10 it will be the sending unit that is bad. It is easy to change for the most part.
