Default oil path back to pan from block/valve lifters?

I'm cleaning the space arround the valve lifters with a vacuum sucker, but how many holes should it be that the oil drain back to pan? Its a GC 1993 4.0L, some picture or drawings of the block from the top where i can se the holes?

Thanx ol''blue, but i need from the block down to pan :-) I have tried to clean up all the sludge between the valve lifters, but i cant find hole between all the lifters, some have it but i need to know if there shoul be drain back hole between every lifters. Its look like its a large drain hole in front and back and one or maybe two holes in the middle? but then some of the lifters would been soaked in oil all the time if there isnt drain hole at every lifter, is that correct?

yes, but that is the head and not the block. I need to know how many holes there are in the block arround the lifters that drain oil back to pan, the block, not the head ;-)

That's the top of the 4.0L block. The cut out area is where the push rods go through, on the passenger side. That's where the oil drains back through the block.

Thanx, but i need to see down to the lifters. There are small holes between the lifters where the oil return to pan. But between some of my lifters there are so much hard sludge that i dont want to push a screwdriver to see if i find the hole, if there is hole there i could push the sludge down and i dont want that. If there should be drain holes between all the lifters i will buy a good vacuum cleaner to get the sludge out. I have used a normal houshold vacuum cleaner but that didnt get the sludge out. But if there shouldnt be drain holes between all the lifters then i can let it be there.

If i push the sludge down the holes, will it go directly down to the pan and then to the filter?

If if falls through it can plug up the oil pump screen/pick-up, causing serious issues later. Maybe you should just pull the oil pan off and use a degreaser and get all the sludge cleaned out of there and let it run out of the bottom into a big tray/pan. Then you don't have to worry about something getting clogged up later.

If the top of the engine has that much sludge, you can bet the pan has just as much. Pull the pan and do it right. JMHO.
