Default only highest fan setting......

This morning I noticed my 2001 GC had only the highest fan setting working. I usually run the second to the highest setting but now no settings other than the highest work. What can I do to fix it? What is broken? It was -24 degrees this morning so luckily I still had the one setting but I'd like to fix it since we have at least a couple more months of winter yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your blower motor resistor is bad and when that happens the high setting still works ,it's a very easy fix .

How do I go about fixing it? Good to hear it's possibly easy.

The resistor is located underneath the dash on the passenger side you will see where the underneath of the dash and the floor almost meet center passenger compartment there will be a cover with 2 Phillips head screws and a wiring clip the wiring clip should have a black green blue and orange wire unplug it remove the two Phillips head screws and the resistor should come out with the cover

Hey RIZ! How come you're always having trouble with this WJ? Don't you treat her right? lol. Seriously, it's a simple fix, but if it happens again soon, you'll need to replace the fan motor also. When they get old they draw more current and overheat the resistor. Check the plug for melting also. BTW, high speed doesn't go thru the resistor. When it gets super-cold, a lower fan speed actually gets hotter because the air has more time to get hot going thru the core.

I do take care of it and do regular maintenance on it but it just seems that these things happen and need fixing. I bought it a few years ago now and I'm going through all the new-ish owner fixes that come about. I went through it really well the first year I had it and fixed alot of stuff the PO didn't take care of. It's a reliable GC now and I love it but every now and then stuff goes bad. It's the first GC I've ever owned so I don't know that much about them but learning every day. I work on as much on my vehicles as I can and have learned alot about GCs. I have helped a lot of other GC owners fix problems. You gotta ask for help at times to learn. I'll fix this one too but good to hear other details like how it needs to be replaced soon before the fan motor goes bad........... that is information that I look for when I ask what may seem like a simple fix question.

I was only jerking your chain, buddy. No harm, no foul. Do you know about this website? wjjeeps.com There's a lot of info about WJ's and I learned stuff like how to pull the instrument cluster and the fact that the shifter is lighted by a membrane, not a bulb. The connector was loose on mine.

Yup, I've been over there a few times to learn how to replace the instrument panels bulbs as well as some stereo and speaker help. A good site.

Default Fan works but not on high.....sort of

So my 99 xj, the blower fan. It works on levels 1-3 but when I go to level 4 when I’m on defroster mode, it sounds like it starts to work then almost like something shuts and it no longer comes out. Don’t wanna say blend door because the temps are where they should but it’s almost like a flap falls or something like that. Any suggestions?

Well, you're talking about an XJ and the heater is different internally than the ZJ or WJ so I haven't a clue, but it sounds like an actuator vacuum leak. The blend door is electrically controlled and varies the temperature only.
