Rear axle problems
Hello I have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee Limted v6 4.0 4x4, I'm trying to figure out what rear end axle I have because the seal that has the ratio on it is completely gone. I know I need a new one I'm shopping around but I have no clue. What kind or whatever it could be, don't know a whole lot about jeeps. So if someone could please help me out. Ill love you forever

There is a search button, use it. Youll find this question asked a million times over. Youll find a chart with a picture of different diff covers and all you have to do is match it with what looks like yours.

I'm 99% sure it's a Dana 35. This is the normal one for the 4.0 in your model. The only other option was the Dana 44 which only came with the V8. The D44 has an aluminum case and is easy to check. I have a picture of the rear covers of all the Jeep diff covers and will post it if I can figure out how.

My file exceeds the data limit for posting, but I believe I got from a jeep website I found with google.
After reviewing my file, I found the Dana 35 cover to be totally round like a saucepan. Check it out.

Check and see if the tag is still on your front axle (ratio) because they will both be the same. Otherwise, you'll probably will have to open her up and count the teeth. Divide ring by pinion should give you the number. Generally, tow package jeeps have 3.73 and others have 3.55. Don't hold me to that, though. What your mechanic gave you is a part number for the axle.
I never know which to call jeeps. Are they cars, trucks, or just Jeeps?
