I have a new 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Has less than 10k on it. I have been to multiple dealerships and have had multiple parts replaced and yet no one can seem to figure out what is wrong. I have a rattle coming from the rear passenger side. Almost sounds like if you threw a empty tin can down the road. It only does it when I'm breaking to stop or when I am turning right. Seems to be louder when the weather is more damp out or light rain. I have had my rear shock replaced as well as the rear brakes and rotors. Yet still having the same problem. Any idea as to what this could be or where my next step would be to look?? This noise is making me crazy!!

I have family that are mechanics that I'm going to have look at as well.

Are the dealerships confirming that they hear the sound? Have you done a ride along with a service tech to make sure they hear it?

Yes. I drove with 2 different techs. They both herd it. The first time was with the dealership I bought the car from. After going back in after they replaced the shock, they had me drive with someone. He herd the rattle and said he thought it was my heat shield and adjusted it. But that did nothing. Then due to their customer service I went to another dealership. The service manager at the other one herd the noise and that's when he decided to replace my rear brakes and rotors. I picked it back up 2 days ago and the noise is still there. It's almost louder now.

Heat shield guy was on the right track but you cant adjust the heat shield. Tailpipe probably hitting it. Cut a 1/2" out of the tailpipe before the heat shield?

I have the same noise!! I had my wife drive my Cherokee while I sat in the trunk and waited for the noise to come. Eventually it did, and noticed it's coming from the driver's side. I marked roughly where the noise was coming from and it was on the upper side. It sounds like something plastic being thrown around in there hitting metal. I popped out the plastic and just saw the wiring taped up good from factory, and everything was in place. I can't figure it out! If anyone figures out what this noise is please let me know so I can fix it. It's getting louder and louder by the day.

Did you ever get the rattle resolved by your dealer?

I have a 2017 Trailhawk and it does the same noise/rattle on the area near the rear passenger wheel well. It is like a plastic connector banging on the metal of the well.

I took out the interior panels, and even the subwoofer unit and couldn't get rid of it. I also inspected the connectors in the wheel well and couldn't find anything out of place there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Those rattles are factory installed. All jeeps have them.
They are a status symbol, usually earned over 200-300k miles. Wear it proudly.

lol ... that I knew, but I didn't believe that I would get one so early in the game. 2nd week with the car @ 1k mi. Haven't seen a dirt road yet.

I'll try to take the plastic wheel well cover today, check out any loose crap in there.

They built too much "road manners" into these new Jeeps. Independent suspension is a mistake for Jeeps. It's fine for docile mall crawlers, Sunday drivers and grocery getters. Solid axles still rule.

Take the new mush boxes out to trail and wail on them. Hump those bumps and grind those stumps and don't forget the rinse cycle through/across a shallow river or mud wallow. The rattles will either go away or something will break. Then you can fix it or get it fixed - after the washdown.

I'm thinking evap carbon canister. It's behind the driver's rear wheel above the steel panel.

Just a thought but I have had a few customers over the years with the un traceable noise in the rear. Check the jack if it's located under the rear seats or in the cargo area. Sometimes the jack was not secured well from the factory and can rattle and clunk.

Hey guys,

So I found the source of the rattle. Apparently the screws that hold the upper mount of the shock absorber where not fully torqued to specs. I tightened those bolts and the rattle disappeared.
