Hi Guys,

Would you recommend a performance chip for a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7 4WD?

I would not mind spending under 500$ for a Chip that actually improves HP/Torque/MPG if they really do work.

How about a Cold Air Intake or Short Ram Intake System, or any other performance parts?

What do you guys say? If yes, please give me some decent brands, thank you!

PS: I am only looking to improve MPG primarily and speed secondly. I don't want to change the look or size (lift) of this WK Jeep.

I have never heard of a chip that would increase mpg and speed. I use to have a chip in my drag car it made a huge difference but I could watch my gas gauge needle move down when I raced it was crazy. If you want to improve performance yeh sure if you want to improve mpg try k and n air intake system colder spark plugs for a cleaner burn and check tires with a less aggressive tread for a lower drag. Plus its a jeep their not aerodynamic worth a damn.

I have heard of chips that can increase performance on small diesel engines, but never heard of a person that bought one for his jeep and thought it was a good idea afterwards.

The 96 and newer vehicles have an ODB II system. With these you usually don't replace a chip. You reprogram the PCM.

I hear that a lot of dust goes in when using a K&N Filter and that AEM cold intake filters supposedly require less maintenance (Oil?) are better, what do you guys think?

No man I dont know who you get your info from k and n filter aem doesnt matter what causes them to pick up more dust is too much oil when you spray them. Buy the cheapest air filter you can which would likely be aem and a k and n charger kit. When you spray the oil lightly coat the damn thing and let it sit outside the truck for a little while so it dries out then put it in. If its wet with oil and you put it in it most likely wont dry when you drive it the first time and then it will clog with a **** load of dirt. I used to have my air filter in my fender well above the tire so letting the filter dry a little was key and I have used both aem and k and n they make no difference its the way your air intake pipe is ran dont do to many bends and wrap the intake pipe so it wont absorb engine heat. If you can build a box for the filter so it keeps engine heat away from it.

Oh yeah an issue I see with re writing a pcm is the transmission its so complex if you raise your rpm for gearing or starts your just asking for trouble if you really have the cash just re gear your transmission to a higher gearing you will gain low end torque not hit the gas as much and then you will lose top end but who the hell does over 90 in these trucks. But I wouldnt mess with it 4 wheel drive is a ***** to screw around with when it comes to shifting plus jeeps last forever for a reason no one messes with the gearing and shift timing ect.

Is this necessary?, if I tell this to my mechanic will he understand, my understanding of engines is worth ****.

country boy I bet with the money you put in that you could have bought a vette and a new jeep and had a nice sports car and a off road truck. I used to have my drag/street car like that too much money and time wasted on fixing and tweaking stuff

Since the K&N was brought up a few times here, I figure I'd put my 2 cents.

My brother works in a bike/quad/racing bike shop/dealer. They have full complement of mechanics and a modern shop....

Starting a few year ago, they stopped doing (or paying for) any warranty work on any machines that where using K&N air filter. They even stopped selling them even if they are a "indirect" source of income (from all the engine rebuilds/repairs)

Apparently they are nothing but trouble for the engine. even well lubricated, they allow to much dust and destroy the insides.


He introduced me to Amsoil Nanofiber technology for air filters.

Im sold. (Im glad he told me before I put my old K&N on my new stroker)
