Small evap leak
I've been chasing a P0442 code, trying to get my inspection done, and finally had my buddy "smoke test" it. Bada Bing! he found it in less than 2 minutes. On the bottom of the leak detection pump, there is a rubber elbow on the vacuum supply to power the pump. It had turned to black gum with cracks and covered in powder. I looped a piece of 1/4" fuel line to replace it and now have to do a drive cycle to clear the monitor. While delivering my newspapers tonight, the engine was idling at about 1500 and the purge solenoid was cycling like a machine gun! It finally idled at 750 like it's supposed to and the purge pump returned to normal. I'm guessing the canister was loaded up with fuel and needed to be cleared out. It had me worried for a while!
I just thought I'd pass that along.

Glad you got it figured out. Took me a while to get mine worked out. I had several hoses that were dry rotted. The drive cycle took quite a while too

Okay, that didn't get it! After smoking it 3 times more and not finding anything leaking, my mechanic looked at the SERVICE PORT CAP and added an o-ring inside it. Guess what? THAT'S WHAT WAS LEAKING!!! Of all the not-so-obvious things to think of. Brilliant! He had to give me a 10 day extension sticker for the weekend so I could do my drive cycle and be legal. I've got 2 cold starts on it now and 125 miles. The evap monitor isn't set yet but the 02 heater is. One more cold start and she should be perfect!
According to the FSM, it needs 3 cold starts to set the evap monitor. A cold start is defined as having the engine block between 40* and 85*. What happens when the air temp is already 95*?

Well, since the state inspection is valid with 1 monitor not ready, I'm still going to get my sticker on Tuesday!
