Guys! Guys! Let me see if I can simplify this a bit. A cam rotates to open a valve. Each cylinder has two valves (Usually only 2) each requiring a cam to open them. These cams are mounted on CAMSHAFTS, and depending on the design of the engine can be mounted internally (as in a standard V8) or on top of the head(s). A SOHC motor has one camshaft on each head. A DOHC motor has two camshafts on each head. Beyond that, engine design gets quite complicated and with VVT (variable valve timing) gets obsurd. Unless you get into racing, keep it simple! Just remember, highly stressed engines don't last as long as tractors! LOL.

"Horsepower sells cars and Torque wins races" I believe Carrol Shelby said that

I didn't quote anyone, did I? Besides, when you're stuck in the mud, which do you want?

woooowww SOHC is the cam is over the valves. thats it. its just a comfiguration. SOHC means one camshaft controls all the valves. timing chain controls it. its really not a hard concept

On a V8 2 camshafts control the valves on a SOHC motor.

NOW YOU GOT IT!! It only gets complicated when you shorten the word "camshaft" to "cam". A camshaft can be driven by gears, a chain, or a toothed belt. If you want to see a completely obsurd cam drive system, look at the Gurney-Weslake Ford V-8 built for Indy in the 60's. It had dual overhead camshafts driven by a total of 26 gears! They also changed the valving so the injectors were on the exhaust ports and the exhaust came out in the center of the motor to make it more compact and streamlined! This motor was put into the Lotus that Jimmy Clark used to win Indy that year, thus changing the race forever!

As I've said before, When you're talking Jeep, Keep it simple and reliable, unless you're racing Baja!

To alloutperform, it's fun when you're 20, not much when you're 60!
