Spare tye compartment closed off. Opinions...
I'm working at preparing a 2000 WJ Grand Cherokee I recently bought for a "camper" conversion.
The vehicle already ahd the rear seats stripped out but the whole area is in a rough and unfinished condition so I am looking at stripping as much back as I can before I install a frame for insulation and paneling.
One of the things I discovered is that the previosu owner has welded a steel plate to close off the spare tyre compartment (see picture).
Now, preferably I would like to open this up to use it as underfloor storage space. The spare (which isn't there at the moment) would be mounted on the roof or on a rear swingarm.
However as I am aware that the fuel tank is located underneath this compartment I am hesitant to take a welder ir grinder to it.
So, it's time for opinions; should I just leave the steel plate in place or remove it?

I'd do some noggin' pokin' before cutting, but you are probably good to go. There is a layer of steel under there, a good 10 inches down, and an air gap between that layer and the actual tank.
I;'d cut a small piece out of the center to eye ball what's in there, and go from there.
Be prepared to find a few kilos of cocaine!
