Timing Chain issue

The camshaft centerline, both timing marks, and the crankshaft centerline should form a straight line. Both timing marks should be directly opposite each other. What you found was TDC on the exhaust stroke. Turn the crankshaft another complete turn and the timing marks should line up properly. You may be one tooth off which will let it run, but not well.
If the distributor rotor is pointing 180 out, pull it, turn it 180, and put in back in. On engines that have a gear on the bottom of the distributor, I've actually put the bare cap on it, called where the rotor was pointing #1, and installed the wires in the proper firing order. But those were Chevys!

HappyPappy, you said the original owner put this engine together? Do you have any pictures of your timing set? Did original owner give you a list of what was replaced in this engine?

Well, I don't understand this 15 chain pin thing. My Haynes book covers 93-04 and it shows the timing marks pointing at each other. The ONLY time in my history that chain links came into the picture was on a 57 Ford Y-block 292 V8.

I must agree, there is no bloody reason to count the links....you could not alter that count even if it mattered. Line up the marks, set the dist to number one and be done.

Seeing how dist is non adjustable like most other vechicles now adays its just a double check to confirm its installed correctly being one tooth off nowadays is a big deal unlike the older cars ....

Oh! I get it! After you install the chain set, you turn the engine and count the links to see if you did it right. Dumb, but I get it. Then you have to turn the engine around some more to re-align the marks to put the distributor in.
Why are things so complicated today. I remember putting parts from several used motors together and drag racing it. Again, that was a Chevy small block.
