Timing Chain issue

Everything was set on No 1, rotor at #1 (about 5 o-clock). Now is it possible the dowel pin for the cam gear was put in/on the wrong whole. My timming marks are good on the crank but the gears mark is around 11 o-clock position. They are supposed to be directly accros from each other, (11 crank-5 on the gear), that would through everyting off,

Very nice pictures, yes I know that is what it should look like, but with the dist on #1 the cam gear mark (mine) is at 11 o-clock. I,ll get into it more today, double check everything, just want to make sure it goes back together the right way.

I just thought of the best way to verify the cam timing. With the valve cover off, both valves should be closed on #1 when the crank is at TDC compression. THEN you can worry about the distributor. I'm not certain, but it is possible that with the timing marks aligned, it's NOT on the compression stroke. That would be weird, but it's possible. I've seen stranger things with different motors.

OK, here is what I came up with, If you set the marks where they are supposed to be, by the book, you'll be timing the engine on #6 cyl, but you are on the intake strock of #1. I think I was getting confused with the dist. These newer engines are done way different then the older motors. Got it back together and it runs fine. Thanks for all the help everyone.

That was going to be my next thing. I'd be willing to bet with the timing marks aligned, the crank pulley won't align with the TDC mark on the cam cover.
