With an Auto tranny you want a Dexron III fluid.
With a manual you want a GL-4 80w-90 gear lube. Not GL-5. The sulfur with eat the yellow metal portions of the tranny.

im going to get my fluid changed and some people on the net is saying use atf+4 and my mechanic wants to use dexronIII so im confused on what to use. its a 99 cherokee not a grand cherokee i didnt know if this was the right section to post. its a 4.0 2wd . so for sure dexronIII?
