Can anyone tell me the difference between the 249 and the 242? I just bought a 95 Cherokee 5.2L on the center console it says selectrac has 2wd 4Hi part time N and 4Lo. I only have 4Hi N and 4Lo. The VIC keeps saying service 4WD Switch. Ive looked and it has the 249 J TC. Is this TC shot? I just don't know because Ive never owned a Jeep before.. Any help would be awesome

Select Trac is 242. If you looked at the TCASE and the tag said 249, Sounds like someone swapped a 249 in for some unknown reason and left the 242's shift gate and bezel in there, typically people go the other way they swap their 249 for a 242.

The difference is the 249 has a viscous coupling in there for the 4wd H setting for full time use. 4L still locks the front and rear drive shaft together.

Where as the 242 uses a differential device in the T-case to achieve the full time 4wd setting. And obviously has the 2wd setting as well.

249 is a full time four wheel drive case, kinda like all wheel drive, whereas the 242 is a two wheel drive case, with four high full time (like yours) four high part time, neutral and four low part time.

difference is, the 242 has two wheel drive option.

Hi all, I’ve got a 95 Grand Cherokee 5.2l Limited. I’m new to the Jeep world. Does anyone know what TC this year came with? On my shift selector it says selectrac with the 2wd. When I bought it they told me they couldn’t get it out of 4wd. I said I’ll figure it out. Well I guess come to find out it has the 249 tc and I’m told it’s full time 4wd. So my question is what tc can I switch it out with to when I’m able to have 2wd also??

You need a np242 or np231 for 2wd.

Will either of them bolt up with out and modifications? Or will I have to change a bunch of things
