Transmission
I have a 97 Grand Cherokee, 4.0 with Select Trac transmission, 367,000 miles. New engine at 300,000. Recently reverse went out. Should I get it rebuilt? Have found a used one from a 98 with 200,000 miles. What would be a reasonable price for a rebuild? TIA

with well over 200k miles, i would just put in a used trans.
you would be hard pressed to find someone to rebuild that trans for less than a grand.
those are horrible transmissions. some 4.0 guys would do an aw4 swap, but that's not as easy as it sounds either.

Old fart with a wrench
Yeah, I would just stick a used tranny into it, THEN if you'd like to learn something, try rebuilding the original yourself! The only dangerous part is that 600 lb spring in the O/D unit.
BTW, I doubt very seriously that 200K used transmission is much good at this point. My 2000 WJ has 197K on the original trans, but it feels tired. It's still shifting properly, but I'm not going to beat on it to prove that.
