Default DIY auto transmission flush

I didn't realize (or check to see <g>) that the Jeep tranny held so little fluid. My Tacoma holds some huge amount - 12 or more quarts as I recall. But even starting out a quart high maybe I'll just pump out 2 quarts at a time. It's easy because it doesn't really come out very fast.

The 42re holds about 9 quarts total, but most is in the converter. The industry stopped putting drain plugs in the converter on the late 50's. There are oversized deep pans available, but that's something else hanging low. Not good for an off-road vehicle! They may have a place if you're racing or towing in a hot climate.

New thing I noticed is when I'm in 3rd gear? I think it's really short like 2200 Rpm to 2500 then it shifts seems odd. Any ideas?

I did go through and replace transmission fluid, filter and gasket it seems to be doing fine. T still does shift really quick out of third idk if that's supposed to happen all else is good.

One time when I was a kid we kept getting a Jaguar XK-140 back in the shop for overheating all the time. It had a newer 3.8 engine in it. I think the original was a 3.2 or 3.4 liter. Anyway; we had flushed and cleaned and rebuilt the radiator and water pump - all kinds of stuff - but the owner said that it still overheated.

I think the stock oil pan held 10 or 12 quarts. But there was a bigger pan sitting there that had come off an SCCA car's race engine. I'm not sure now but I think it held 16 or 18 quarts or something. It was about 3" deeper.

My crazy Italian machinist boss driiled holes in the front and the back and then silver soldered six 3/4" brass tubes in - just above the bottom of the pan. The deep oil pan hung down lower than the frame and the tubes were for air flow he said - to cool the oil. I remember the discuss over the repair bill when Joe said:

"The oil pan she was bad - that's why it overheat alatime - we fix now - so no more problem for you. Finito! (he was waving his hand like shooing the customer away when he said that <g>) You pay now."

The The overheating problem never came back but the owner sure did scream later about the cost of oil changes going up. <g>

I have often wonder if that idea would work to cool an automatic transmisssion.

I'm sure it would, but an aux cooler works just as well. Besides, on a 4X4, do you want lower ground clearance? If I had a problem with a trans overheat, I'd put a LARGE truck type cooler on it and hang it near the bottom of the radiator for more air flow when you need it most for towing.

Isnt that your transfer case? Try adjusting your bands when you do the filter and fluid change. And can someone say what is recommended for transfer cases these days?
