Transmission problem
I've got a 98 grand cherokee Laredo automatic. When you first start it and put it in reverse its got a whining sound but it goes right in gear then neutral is fine drive it seems to start In first gear. Put it in second with the shifter and I still seems like it's in first. But when you put it in first with the shifter it wants to go in reverse at first then it's like you holding the break it just don't want to go either way. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What you have you already looked at so far? I see no need to send you on a wild goose chase, but here are some first thoughts. Also, did this just start without any changes, or has this transmission been out recently or recently rebuilt or reassembled?
First things to check:
What is the fluid level on the transmission on the dipstick? is it over filled, under filled, right in range?
Does the shifter bind or move smoothly - do you have to force it into any position?
Are you getting any P07xx/P08xx codes?
Do you get the same behavior when in 2WD/4HI/N/4LO on the 4x4 shifter (obviously no 2WD in a QuadraTrac/249)

It only the 2wd it had a code for speed sensor i have replaced it now there is no code. The transmission fluid is right on the full line. It don't smell its still pink. There is no problem in the shifter every thing is smooth there it's tries to even take off in first unless you manually put it there then it goes backwards for probably a inch then it's just like you push and hold the brake trying to power stall

This really sounds like it's pointing to a problem with shift linkage adjustment or possibly an issue in the valve body - stuck pistons, solenoid or blockage, the 42RE is the only transmission I am aware of mated to the 4.0L in '98, but the transmission side should be the same regardless of whether OBDI or OBDII controls (shift control may be different). I don't have my '98 manual scanned in, but i have sent you a PM with a link to the transmission chapter from my 1995 - please download it as I cannot guarantee how long it will be available. My transmission problem I had in my '95 sounds completely different from what you are describing, and turned out to be an electrical problem with a stuck-open relay in the TCM feeding no power to solenoids.
Next step to confirm is by verifying the shift linkage as per the directions in the chapter for linkage adjustment on the 42RE (21- 79 "Gearshift Cable Adjustment"). If that does not correct it (or in any way change the behavior), if so equipped check the throttle valve cable as well (I believe this is only 93-95, 96-98 should use TPS position and handle this in electronics - but I haven't messed with my 98 transmission at all since I bought it aside from a OSS sensor replacement last weekend for a P0720 code).

Ok thanks for the info I will sure give e it a try. I was kinda thinking maybe something in the wiring harness in transmission. My trans relay does get pretty warm for some reason.
