Urgent Transmission Question!
Hello Jeep fam I have a 93 grand Cherokee with the v8 which comes with the 46rh transmission. I’m in the process of rebuilding the whole Jeep. So I was replacing the transmission fluid, the gasket, and the filter. Got that all done also did the engine oil pan gasket and the oil pump. Also did tie rod, drag link, pitman arm, and steering damper. Got the Jeep turned back on when I hit it in reverse it backs up but takes quite a bit of gas, when I kick it into drive it goes for a bit and dies! I’m thinking maybe it’s the transmission? Just because how hard it is to get it moving. I used STP DEX/MERC https://www.autozone.com/motor-oil-and-transmission-fluid/transmission-fluid/p/stp-dex-merc-automatic-transmission-fluid-1-gallon/811753_0_0 that’s the link. Do you guys think it’s the type of fluid that I used? If I look at the dip stick I’m pretty sure that’s the type of fluid it needs.

The 46RH uses ATF+4 fluid not DEX fluid..
Note that draining the transmission doesn't remove lots, only about 1/2 to 2/3. It is "easy" to drain more by removing or by loosening the valve body. It is also possible to use compressed air during the process to blow out the cooler lines. The torque converter still retains LOTS of fluid.
Note that the correct Factory Service Manual is an essential tool for servicing this vehicle. It is an excellent document.
FWIW, this topic shows my 46RH rebuild and might have useful information.

Okay I have a Haynes manual and will read into it some more but I’ve always been told that the dipstick tells you what it uses and mine says dex 2 or automatic transmission fluid. Last time I used trans fluid it was an Stp dex 2 that I can’t remember where I bought.

The correct OEM Jeep FSM manual is great.
The '93 FSM says to use Mopar ATF Plus (Type 7176), that has now been superseded by ATF+4.
The '93 Haynes says '93 Mercon / Dexron III and '94 and later, Mopar Plus 3 Type 7176.
Again, everything I've seen says no Dexron into the 46RH, except now this Haynes manual.

Let’s assume that I am using the correct type of fluid. Do you think maybe I don’t have enough in it? I only drained what was in the pan and nothing else, so I have about 5quarts in it right now. That should’ve been enough right? If not im just going to drain it all and try the atf 4

Transmission at normal operating temperature, cycle through all gear selections, stopping for several seconds at each setting, vehicle on level ground, use fully inserted wiped clean dipstick to check level w/ transmission in Neutral.
