I don't think I would go so far as to say that the entire transfer case is junk. I just think the stupid VC in them is junk. It is a pretty strong case. I think the torque failure point is a little higher than the 231 and 242 but it hangs just a little bit lower. I really wish there was some sort of way to replace the VC with something more reliable, then it would be a decent case. Either way, I'm still swapping in a 231.

Also, I am not a big fan of my d44a. If the Jeep came with an NP242 or 231 with a d44 rear or 8.8 and an HP30 in the front, it would have been perfect for my use.

that's the way i set my xj up... np242, d44, hp d30. it's a good set up. maybe pushing it with the 35's i have on it but i like it
