The fuel injected four cylinder put out more horsepower than the 2.8. If you like oil leaks and a junk carb, then the 2.8 is for you. Keep looking and find a 4.0 Cherokee.

The 2.8 I had in my 84 Celebrity (same engine, just FWD) was a dog. I don't if they used the same carb for the S10s and the XJ, but it stalled and vapor locked a lot. Only way I would consider a XJ with the 2.8 would be with a stick shift. D44s were only 87-89 or so, and only the rear... Uber rare.

Basic question, "Is the v6 engine any good ?"

Basic answer, " NO! "

They really are not that bad and for whats its worth all of their problems really relate to the era they came from, Leaks, emissions, no power, etc.

2.8 = junk.
D44 came in some XJs and some MJs with a towing package. Never were in the front. Front is the D30.

Id buy something that already has the 4.0....87 or newer.
