thought of that but just prefer the wj body stye better, and in my area i have only ever seen afew 98 limiteds with the 5.9 for sale. They are rather rare and when I did see them they all had a ton of miles on them ( I was looking to buy one in the past ) but thanks for the input

there were only 14,286 5.9 Limiteds made, and im sure a good handful were wrecked, and probably some more got turned in for cash-for-clunkers. thats why theyre so hard to find.

I have a '99 WJ with the 4.7L. I got the Jeep with 67k on it and now have around 153k. Never had a single problem with the engine. It is actually one of the most dependable cars I have and as far as power go with the 4.7. The 4.0 was great for the smaller Xjs but just doesn't do it for the grands. As far as overheating most of that I imagine is stupidity and not paying attention to what the temp gage reads. I've had to replace the fan clutch and radiator but I drive the crap out of it and it's never let me down. That being said its going to be hard to tell if the WJ you are looking at has been abused or not. If you can't check inside the engine at least try to get it from someone/somplace reliable that did the proper maintenance. Good luck!

My 02 WJ has 236,000 mile on original engine, trans, tc(selectrac), and axles. They had over heating issues due to the hydro cooling fans. I have a 2 speed taurus fan on mine.Transmissions are dirt cheap for them used. $300-500 because the yards are full of them. The 545FRE has a low failure rate. Mine has a TCC lock up fault sometimes the solenoid sticks.

WJ w/ V8 is about 4000lbs. Not sure if that's a problem but I think this makes it the heaviest Jeep. ZJ w/ V8 seems like a better choice.
