Best bang for buck? probably 1998. Not TOOOOO old, lots of parts available, 5.9 also great engine...Not bad looking either.

Ive only seen a few of the 5.9s running around.
With that motor you could pull a barn down and have power left over.
The 04 models with the 4.7, are they comparable on power to the 5.9 ?
How about mpg ?

The 4.7L has plenty of power, and gets much better mileage in comparison to the 5.9L.
The 5.9L:
Horsepower: 250@4000 RPM
Torque: 335@3200 RPM
The 4.7L
Horsepower: 235@4800 RPM
Torque: 295@3200 RPM
The 4.7L HO:
Horsepower: 270@5100 RPM
Torque: 330@3600 RPM

That is what I am talking about and the 4.0L has a ton of it way down low in the power band, especially if you let it breath a little easier with exhaust and a bored TB. One day I will dyno mine, would guess I up over 220hp right now.
Here are factory specs for all the WJ motors

And having a V8 just plain ROCKS! You know deep down you want one!!
You just don't want to pay what it costs....Sure is nice to have when you're not at the gas station though....
Read again...

Horsepower: 250@4000 RPM
Torque: 335@3200 RPM
The 4.7L
Horsepower: 235@4800 RPM

The 4.7L HO:
Horsepower: 270@5100 RPM
Torque: 330@3600 RPM
The 4.7L as an over all engine is the clear winner. 5 ft-lbs of torque difference means squat!
Besides, I can't handle too much more torque with my unibody anyway....Why they didn't put a frame under these I'll never understand....

I'm not saying the 4.7 is a bad motor, hell my next Jeep will prob be a WJ with one. I just feel the 5.9 is a better choice with alot more in the way of mods on the market for it...

Actually, they both won a few and lost a few. The advantage for the 4.7L guy was was a standard trans (R/T model only available in auto) and steeper gears available from the factory, so it's not ALL engine.
Given the difference in HP and Tq ratings Vs. engine efficiency of the 2 engines, it is my personal opinion that the 4.7L wins hands down...
Just my response to:
Biggest problem with most V8 Jeeps though...they've got torque, but what do they send torque to? Dana 30's, and Dana 35's...You would think if you're going to offer a torquey engine option, you might offer a beefier axle (AT LEAST as an optional upgrade) to put under it...Wouldn't it be sweet if you could order an XJ, ZJ, WJ, WK, etc...from the factory with an option of a Dana 44's or a pair of Dana 60's underneath? That would be "trail rated"
