Unhappy ZJ Transmission Slippage

We have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle had been parked in the garage for a couple of years while I had other projects. When I started to get it going again I noticed a lot of the transmission fluid had leaked out due to a faulty transmission pan gasket. So I changed the gasket, filter and fresh fluid. Now I'm experiencing a delay/slippage when shifting into drive or reverse before it grabs hold. It is mostly when the transmission is cold and doesn't seem to be a problem once the transmission is warmed up. It didn't do this prior to the vehicle being parked for a couple of years, in fact it ran great all around. What could be the problem? Transmission solenoids?

Welcome to the forum.

Why not update your signature to identify the vehicle, year, engine and transmission?

What was the condition of the old fluid and extent of contamination in the pan?

Sitting is hard on a vehicle. Seals harden and shrink. Solenoids might get sticky.

I suggest you start with a transmission flush. See my sig, #3. Then add some AT-205. It's meant as a leak stop, but it works by softening hard seals. I have had some excellent results from it. I mean dramatic results. I have also used it and seen very little effect. I suspect that has to do with the type, material, and condition of the seal.

But it's a lot cheaper than tearing into a transmission, so I think it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the advice wingless.
Hard to tell for sure on old fluid, leaked out onto wood, newspaper and dirty garage floor. What was left in the pan looked good and very little debris in the pan.

Thanks BlueRidgeMark. What was left of the fluid appeared good. Think I will drain again and check out the fluid color, etc. , and pan for debris, then perhaps replace solenoids. I'm admittedly a little nervous about flushing a running transmission.

This topic shows my 46RH rebuild. It may have information useful for your 46RH.

I'm sure it's clear. That doesn't mean it won't help free up sticky parts or soften old seals. Age counts, not just miles.

That 46RH has two solenoids, one for the lockup converter, the other for the overdrive.

The symptoms don't sound like the solenoids are problematic.

Note that the Factory Service Manual (FSM) has an excellent transmission section, including diagnostics.

Here is the valve body showing those two solenoids.
