Default 76' CJ-7 Help (Axle, etc.)

Okay, my friend has a 1976 automatic (maybe modified to be an auto, don't know much about that yet) Cj-7 that he bought from someone who was in the process of restoring it. He purchased it to be used as a DD and is currently having trouble with the rear axle. He said it that when he puts in gear and accelerates that the rear tires vibrate back and forth from left to right. Anyways my question is does that mean the differential/axle is done for, or can it be repaired? And if it should be replaced what are my chances of finding a new axle at the jy to replace it. And what would be compatible with the 76 cj7 because i highly doubt that i'll be able to find that model. thanks in advance, sorry I sound uninformed about the whole situation but i'm just trying to be as clear as I can so I can get some advice to help my friend. Thanks in advance guys.
